CHANUTE, Kan. - (KOAM) - Fifth and sixth graders at Chanute Christian Academy got a very unique perspective of the planet we all call home.

“I think the vibrancy of the way that they're presented just makes it look much more real life, almost like you're seeing it from outer space,” school administrator Ashley Tromsness said.

The Neosho County Conservation District's educational effort, known as "Earth Balloon," is designed to teach young students about what makes planet Earth so special and the importance of preserving its resources. Before stepping inside this inflatable sphere, District Manager Joyce Kramer gave students an informative presentation about one of our most valuable resources: water.

“They can visualize how much water is actually on Earth by seeing the Earth balloon," explained Kramer. "And then by breaking it down into our usable water really hits home on how little bit of that water is actually consumable water.”

While much of this information is available on maps, the experience inside the inflatable Earth balloon offers a captivating visual that helps students retain this critical knowledge.

“We let them explore the globe, which also can fit in their hands. But the Earth balloon is, I think they said 20ft tall," said Tromsness. "And it is mind blowing when you walk in and see it in the grand scale. It's so exciting for the kids. Every time they walk in, they just kind of gasp. It's beautiful."

Earth Balloon Inc. has made its way around schools nationwide since 1992. This one is one of two in the state of Kansas. The Conservation District hopes that interactive presentations like this will inspire the next generation to develop a deeper appreciation for Earth's natural resources.

“I just hope they take away that Earth is precious to us, and our natural resources are precious to us, and it will get them more aware on pollution and such,” said Kramer.
